WEEKEND SHOP / FIELD NOTES
Choose a bat your player can control
Length and drop are a starting point. A comfortable swing matters.
Start with the bat they use now
Before replacing a bat, record its length, weight and certification. Watch a few ordinary practice swings. Is the player keeping the barrel under control, or working hard just to move the bat? Ask the coach what would help before assuming that a longer bat is an upgrade.
Drop is the difference between length in inches and weight in ounces. A 30-inch, 20-ounce bat is labeled -10. That describes the listed weight relationship, not how the bat feels in every player’s hands. Two bats with the same length and drop can feel different.
Fit the player today
Use the manufacturer’s chart to narrow the choices, then try an appropriate bat at a store or supervised practice if possible. Height and age charts are broad references. Strength, comfort and experience also affect control. Avoid buying extra length solely to cover a future growth spurt.
Compare the complete selected variant: length, weight, certification, barrel and construction. Similar names can belong to different models. Save the exact selection before checkout.
Make the first session a fit check
Let the coach observe a normal warm-up. If the player consistently changes posture or struggles to control the barrel, revisit the size while the return window permits it. Follow the bat maker’s care and use instructions; do not alter a bat to change its performance.
