WEEKEND SHOP / FIELD NOTES
The small gear in the batter’s box
Choose batting gloves and grips around fit and the rules.
Solve a specific need
Begin with the player’s existing grip. If the handle feels uncomfortable or the tape is worn, identify that problem before adding accessories. Batting gloves and replacement grips change how a handle feels; neither is a substitute for a bat the player can control.
Measure the hand using the selected manufacturer’s chart. Youth and adult labels do not replace measurements. Check whether the listing includes a pair or a single glove, and let the player close a hand around a handle to assess bunching.
Grip thickness changes the handle
A thin wrap and a padded wrap can feel quite different on the same bat. Choose deliberately rather than matching a color alone. Follow the grip maker’s installation instructions and the bat manufacturer’s restrictions. Do not cover model or certification markings.
Ask the coach about accessory rules before buying training weights or handle attachments. Little League’s current rules prohibit the traditional batting donut. Rules elsewhere can differ, so a warm-up product being sold does not make it legal for every event.
A small repair routine
Air out gloves and check the grip for loose edges, tears or slick spots after practice. Label spare gloves so they do not disappear into a shared dugout. Replace worn accessories before they become a distraction during a swing.
