WEEKEND SHOP / FIELD NOTES
Build catcher’s gear around the measurements
Check every component and confirm the complete set with the coach.
Several fit decisions
A catcher’s set is convenient, but one age label cannot establish helmet, chest and leg fit. Measure each area according to the exact manufacturer’s chart. Confirm what the set contains; a throat protector, cup or another required item may be a separate purchase.
Ask the coach for the governing rules before buying. Certification requirements can apply to individual components. Verify the actual chest protector and helmet configuration rather than assuming every item in a product family has the same certification.
Try a catching stance
Fit straps as instructed, then have the player stand, walk and move into a catching stance under supervision. Check that the chest protector stays correctly positioned and leg guards cover the intended areas without obstructing ordinary movement. Do not cut or modify padding to make a set seem to fit.
Measure again when the player grows or clothing changes. A helmet that fit at the first practice can become uncomfortable later. Keep the maker’s instructions where the family and coach can consult them.
Maintain the complete kit
Create a component checklist and use it before practice, warm-ups and games. Air gear out after use, inspect straps and fasteners, and follow cleaning directions. Report damage promptly and follow replacement instructions after impacts. Protective equipment cannot eliminate all risks.
