WEEKEND SHOP / FIELD NOTES
Choose and check a batting helmet
Head measurements, certified configuration and a secure fit.
Measure before choosing the color
Use the helmet manufacturer’s measurement directions and chart for the exact model. A universal-looking size label does not guarantee fit. If your league provides helmets, ask whether trying one is possible before ordering.
Fit the helmet according to its instructions. Check the liner, shell, ear coverage and any required straps or accessories. Have the player move normally with the helmet fitted. It should stay correctly positioned without uncomfortable pressure or shifting over the eyes.
Confirm the complete configuration
Check your league’s current certification and face-protection requirements. A shell, faceguard and jaw extension should be an approved combination for that exact model. Do not drill extra holes, improvise mounting hardware or assume another brand’s guard fits. Read compatibility instructions before adding an accessory.
Certification does not promise that injury is impossible. Equipment must be used, maintained and replaced as directed by its maker. Never select protection from a marketplace title alone.
Inspect throughout the season
Check for damage, loose parts, deteriorated padding and unreadable labels before use. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions after an impact. Avoid gear with an unknown damage history. Keep the helmet in a compartment where other equipment will not crush or damage it.
